We are going to attempt to answer some questions we have about PARO here.
First off, what is PARO.ai?
Well, according to Jon Repka, the VP of growth, PARO is “An AI Driven Growth Platform”
What is PARO.AI?
What is PARO? It appears Paro was making headlines as far back as 2018, about how they were going to take on the Big 4 Accounting giants.
The article states that the old founder of AOL, once the most dominant provider of internet access in America, leads a $5 Million Series A into the company.
The founder and CEO of Paro is Michael Burdick, and he said he started PARO after being treated poorly & underpaid by Accounting Giant Delloite. He told TechCrunch that "He was being billed out at $250+ an hour, and was only paid $30 an hour", which both "astonished and infuriated him".
The story goes on to say that Burdick and Paro are heavily focused on "income predictability" for their freelancers, which their VC research has probably told them is the most frustrating part for all freelancers.
So they're promising freelancers predictable income, then spending like mad to get engagements with businesses that need services.
They have their eyes on taking a chunk of market share away from the old, protected & crony-laden Big 4 Accounting firms.
So what is Paro.AI?
We're a bit cynical because we're a competitor of PARO - so our cynical answer to the question "What is paro.ai?", is that It's a big tech company, fueled by private equity, trying to become the middle man between businesses that need financial services, and freelancers that don't know how to get those business clients.
The result is that they're spending massively on advertising with venture capital money.
You can find out what PARO.AI is here - VAGUELY - if you watch this video:
“Paro is an AI Driven Growth Platform”
Their AI helps them “vet thousands of accountant & finance professionals, and be very picky about who we invite into our network”.
Jon goes on to say that they are able to “benefit from this great resignation from traditional workplaces”.
In other words, PARO.ai is a third party trying to get in-between accountants and their clients.
They are a third party, getting in-between customers and service providers, much like ANGI, Thumbtack, and the host of other tech giants trying to play gatekeeper.
They claim to be "admitting 1 in every 50 applicants" (accountants & professionals) that apply.
The technology connects those professionals to engagements where their skillset is the best fit, and is aligned to their own growth goals.
Paro.ai is a “network” for accounting & finance professionals.
Paro.AI would like to sell accounting & finance services, have their network of professionals fulfill the work, and then make a cut.
Paro wants to sell accounting services & have you perform them.
Paro wants to gather accountants and professionals to fulfill the work they sell.
In essence, Paro is a middle man between the accountant & the customer.
Paro shows up when you search for accountants, and they are in Google Ads like CRAZY!
While we can’t be sure, PARO appears to rely heavily on paid advertising strategies, simply outspending their accountant competitors in every local market.
We would say that Paro is trying to be an upscale third aggregator for accountants & financial providers.
Not that far off from Upwork, Thumbtack, Angi or Bark.com.
We imagine that Paro would claim they’re nothing like these third parties - but they’ve claimed they’re trying to benefit from the “great resignation” that’s occurred since the covid shutdowns.
Freelancers often struggle to get their own clients, and if Paro is able to deploy some half-way decent advertising campaigns, fueled with over $25 Million in Series C Funding in June of 2023, then they’re going to find some clients.
Their whole claim to fame is using an AI matching software to match professionals to the right engagement, but this would be dependent on their ability to land engagements.
Perhaps it could be said that Paro is a sales & marketing organization that also knows how to attract and organize freelancers - but in an “upscale” manner.
So - what do people think about Paro? Are there any great reviews of PARO?
Here’s what we can find concerning PARO.AI reviews around the internet.
Trust Pilot Reviews of PARO: 3.8/5 Stars after 119 Reviews
The first place, and the primary place where we find reviews is on Paro.ai's Trust Pilot Page.
The reviews of PARO.AI you find on Trust Pilot? People have provided quite a few insights about what it's like from a business perspective, as well as a freelancers'.
As of 9-11-2023, Paro has 119 reviews on Trust Pilot, and an average score of 3.8/5 stars.
What do the reviews say about PARO?
Well, to be expected there's a mixed bag.
One of the major problems about the PARO platform is that while PARO.AI can advertise like crazy, invest in amazing sales people, and even attract lots of freelancers - the "production" needs to be flawless.
See, business owners need people to take complete ownership of their work, because there's not really any room for error.
PARO.AI seems to have a mixed bag of negative reviews & positive reviews, but you can see some themes in their reviews.
PARO.AI Trustpilot reviews are from both providers and business customers.
We see that there's a theme in the Paro Reviews here:
Paro.AI Negative Review Themes on TrustPilot:
- Contracts protect the best interests of PARO, not the accountant or the business customer.
- Many freelancers fail in delivering trustworthy service.
- PARO is great at invoicing, but perhaps struggles to pro-actively deliver on valuable service.
- Freelancers must not feel ownership in delivering at or above expectation, meaning the client get's left hanging.
- Lots of "invoice first, provide conversations last".
- Frequently missed delivery of promises made to customers
Now - any business that does significant amounts of volume will have upset customers periodically, but we see a theme in the Trust Pilot reviews that perhaps it's much harder for a third party to set an engagement & ensure the engagement is fully delivered upon.
Freelancers like to own their results, and it seems like PARO.AI might not have a function like many of the other third party aggregators do, which build up the credibility of a provider.
It doesn't appear that accountants get a profile showing their happy reviews, in a way that's front facing to potential customers.
With no credibility building profile for the freelancer, PARO.ai's value proposition comes down to price & take-home pay.
Sure, it's good that an accountant can rely on PARO to bring them customers, but they've essentially just placed themselves back into the time for money model - the very model that the PARO founders criticized.
I encourage you to read through the reviews of Paro on Trust Pilot and see what they say -
Paro.ai Reviews on Bark.com
You'll also find reviews of Paro.ai on Bark.
Bark is ironically also a third party player that advertises to business clients, uses search engine optimizations, and then sells leads to freelancers and professionals alike.
As of 9-11-2023, Paro has 26 reviews on Bark, and fairly decent makeup of both positive reviews, and negative reviews.
One thing I'm noticing here is that Paro obviously quit using Bark in late 2021 after a series of negative reviews.
Now, it's possible that some of these Paro reviews are just competitors trying to make Paro look bad, but there's also the likelihood that they've been unable to deliver at or above expectations.
